Golden Goose: Are they worth it?
When I first told my husband and other family members that I wanted a pair of Golden Goose, they literally laughed in my face lol And I don’t blame them. We’re talking about paying around 500$ for a pair of sneakers that already look worn! So I did a lot of research before buying my first pair and because I had to go to a few different places to find the answers I wanted, I decided to make my own post that could benefit someone else, maybe you!
PROS:
Italian Leather - Y’all, I just want you to know that genuine Italian leather is famous for a reason. It doesn’t crease the way faux leather does, it doesn’t wear as easily, it just feels and looks different. That’s a super pro to the GG sneakers, the quality of the leather is there and tbh that’s a huge piece you’re paying for with these. So, when I’m looking to invest this big of a price tag, I better be getting something that will last and Italian leather is definitely it.
Style - The cool thing about GG is that they are all so unique. They come in tons of mismatched colors and fabrics. Each shoe design is like a little work of art, so if you are interested in the uniqueness of your style, this is something that might attract you.
Height - I’m 5’2” so one thing that’s different about the GG sneaks is that they actually have a hidden wedge heel in them. So, I thought it was super cool that they had that wedge in them and after trying them on in person what they actually do is lift your heel slightly so that your legs look a little longer in them (like they would in heels but with the illusion that they’re flats). Mind you, the heel is subtle and probably barely an inch or 3/4.
Use - I use mine often. Like every time I have a casual outfit on, I can always throw mine on and go which I needed to make sure I would be able to do since I knew the investment was so high. So, if you are not a sneakers person (i.e. you don’t wear sneakers very often) then this honestly might not be the right place to put your investment. When I’m looking at bigger ticket items, one question I always ask myself is “how often will I wear this” and “would I be just as happy/achieve the look I want with the cheaper version”.
Worn Look - This is going in the pros and cons because this is a tricky one. I didn’t think I’d like the worn look thing but what instantly changed my mind was putting them on for the first time. I instantly felt like I could go out in them and they didn’t have that awkward “new shoe” feeling that you get when you get a fresh pair of white sneakers. Like meeting a stranger that feels like an old friend - just like that.
CONS:
Price - This is obvious. No one wants to spend 500$ on a pair of sneakers. If you don’t think you’ll get the use out of them to make up for the investment you’re making OR you think you’ll achieve almost the same results you want with a cheaper version, then do not spend money just trying to meet some “instagram style trend” or otherwise. There are always “dupes” or other options for these more expensive items. You will NEVER have to sacrifice your financial stability to achieve a style you love, you just have to find the good dupes and sales (and I can help with that!).. k, I’ll stop acting like your mom now :) but seriously, no trend is worth getting yourself in debt or sacrificing important expenses that should take priority in your life.
Comfort - These are comfortable for daily wear. But due to the heel inside, I wouldn’t recommend for a whole day of walking. I wore mine to the San Diego Zoo (super hilly) and my feet were crying by 3pm). So, if you’re like me who doesn’t mind the tiny heel you will probably be fine with them for normal day stuff but I wouldn’t rely on these as your go to amusement park comfies. I will also note that they are genuine leather, which means there is a “breaking in” period. Mine only took a few wears and now they fit like a glove but there’s that.
Worn Look - This is a pro and a con because it comes down to personal preference. I used to think I didn’t like the dirty/worn look but the more I looked at them and after the first time wearing them, I actually loved it. For others, having your clothes/shoes look dirty the day you get them, after you’d paid 500$ for them, just doesn’t sound appealing and I get it.
Trendy - I’m just going to say this again in case you missed it but do not think that you have to buy something to be “trendy” or cool. Your closet should be full of things that you love that work for you. So, if you love the look of GG sneakers but can't afford the price tag then find the dupes and dress those up! You’re the one who makes clothing look good, clothing don’t make you look good. My mom always says “es la muneca no el vestido” - “it’s the doll not the dress”.
